How to download and install the latest version of Remote Desktop Connection.

 

v    Logon to the Internet

v    Follow this hyperlink http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=80111f21-d48d-426e-96c2-08aa2bd23a49&DisplayLang=en

If the hyper does not work, search for “remote desktop connection download” in your favorite search engine, like Yahoo or Google.

The first link should take you to Microsoft’s download site.

v    Once on Microsoft’s website, start the download by clicking the button labeled “Download”. (See Fig.1)Microsoft may change the look of their download page at anytime! So the download button may change position and/or name!

v    A File Download - Security Warning Window should appear. Click the button marked “Run”or “Open”. (See Fig.2)

v    If you are receive a second warning, Select “Run” or “Open” again.

 

Text Box: Users with Windows98/ME/2000 will have to select “Open” instead of “Run”

v    After you have answered the security warnings, the “InstallShield Wizard” should be on your screen. Select “Next”. See Fig.4

v    Click “Next”. See Fig.5

v    You have finished installing the Remote Desktop Client.

How to use Remote Desktop quickly

 

v     Please start the “Remote Desktop Connection” client software.

o       Do This By: Clicking on the “Start” menu, selecting “Programs”, “Accessories”, “Communications”, and then “Remote Desktop Connection”

 

v     Now that Remote Desktop Connection is open on your screen. Enter an IP address or Domain Name of the computer you are connecting to, then click “connect” You will needed to know your user name and password. See Fig.7

Configuring Remote Desktop Connection

 

v     You can manual configure your connection settings each time you connect or create a short with your pre-saved settings.

v    If you need to copy files or print back to your local computer, if your connection is slow, or if you are unhappy with the display quality you may need to change the default logon options. You can also save your connections settings for each remote computer.

v    To configure Remote Desktop, just click on “Options”

 

 

v     After selecting “Options” you will have five different tabs to select from. The instructions go tab by tab.  See Fig.9

v     General, allows you to create/save a shortcut to computer. Fig.10

o       The shortcut will remember all the settings you select. So configure your settings on every tab before saving a shortcut.

o       You typically only need to fill-out the Computer, User name, and Password fields on this tab. If you have instructions to fill-out a Domain, please do so.

 

v     Display, controls screen or image quality. Fig.11

o       These settings can affect your overall connection performance.

§         A larger display size can partially affect connection speed.

§        The amount of Colors can severely affect performance; the more colors the slower the speed. Try to use the 256 or 15bit setting.

v     Local Resources, configures file and print sharing between the remote and local computer  Fig.12

o       Configures file and print sharing between the remote computer serving remote desktop and the local client computer.

§        For file sharing, check the box for “Disk drives”

§        You can access your hard drives from My Computer, or by typing \\tsclient

 into Run.

§        For the ability to print from the remote computer back to your local computer, check “Printers”

§        Your local printer’s software must be installed on the remote computer for printing to work!

§        The “serial ports” box should almost always be uncheck

 

v     Programs, you can set programs to auto start at logon. Fig.13

v     Experience, Fig.14

o       The last tab adjusts the ratio between the users “Experience” and connection performance.  With the drop-down menu on the top of Experience tab you can easily optimize your connection experience. I prefer speed to display quality, which is why I select “Modem (28.8)”. But you may wish to select a different setting or manually checking the features you want.

o       The first four checkbox’s can decrease your connections speed, the last option actual increases performance. Always select the last option, “Bitmap caching”.

§        Desktop background

§        Check to see the same background picture as the remote computer. If you leave this un-checked, the background will be blue.

§        Show contents of window while dragging

§        It allows you to see the contents inside a Window while you drag it across you screen.

§        Menu and window animation

§        Enables the Windows animation for your remote connection.

§        Themes

§        Transfers the complete Windows Theme of the remote computer to your local computer. Windows Themes change the look of Windows. Like the size and colors of buttons and menus.     

  

            

v     After selecting your settings on each tab,

o       click on the “Connect” button

§        These settings will be used for every connection, until you change the settings again.

o       You can save your settings by going back to the “General” tab and clicking save. Your Desktop is typical a good place to store your Remote Desktop Connection shortcut. Save one for each connection you have.
